Spitting Images

For conceptual diarist Todd Moellenberg, producing and sharing his work is a daily activity. He begins by choosing simple materials, such as an idiomatic saying (“three sheets to the wind”), animated gif, or video of a simple gesture (like hammering a nail), and then, building on what he created the day before, he repeats and overlays layers of video and audio until they become abstract and surprisingly musical. Repetition binds it all together— everyday materials transforming into abstract work, a private daily practice shared in public forums—creating a situation where these opposites are both true. For his new piece, Spitting Images, Todd synthesizes his recent explorations into a large-scale work made especially for MFYI. The art print for this month is created by multi-disciplinary artist Angie Jennings, who developed her piece in conversation with Todd and his video concepts. Her work has been described as “mysterious, dynamic, and brimming with an evocative intensity.”
