This month’s art gives us a glimpse into the power of our inner visions, from the memories of the past, through our perception of the present, to our dreams for the future. Artists Squash & Biscuit, Mengxi Yang, and Jose Guadalupe Sanchez III combine tangible and imagined worlds to disrupt our perception of reality.
Creative sound duo, Squash & Biscuit (Shuwen Zhao and Brian Griffith), collaborate with experimental filmmaker Mengxi Yang to craft a world of tangible and digital material. Mengxi’s animation combined with the kaleidoscope of Squash & Biscuit’s digitally manipulated acoustic recordings creates a vibrant collage. A soundscape of found objects and musical instruments morph into a digital music world as the film transforms from live footage to digital and stop motion animation.
Jose Guadalupe Sanchez III’s interdisciplinary work explores the past, present, and future of Brown social realities in Los Angeles. Jose’s painting, Otragalactic Voyage #10, is part of his TrocaNaut Chronicles series of paintings, a futuristic reimagining of his own family’s immigration story. In these works, familiar vans and pickup trucks driven by his father and other family members appear in surreal, cosmic, and fantastical landscapes.
