Searching/Falling presents a music film by electroacoustic duo Hermetic Fever and mail art by Brandon Locher. Both works use structure not as a fixed destination, but as a framework for discovery. Moving between order and unpredictability using intuition, spontaneity, and repetition, these works show how structure can guide a process without necessarily determining its outcome.
Hermetic Fever is a duo inspired by the Hermetic tradition of philosophy, practical magic, potions, and alchemy. Joshua Gerowitz (guitar and electronics) and Louis Lopez (trumpet and electronics) use their fluency with electronics and acoustic instruments to improvise cinematic sonic landscapes with dense noise, melody, and atmospheric sound. They created their film, Searching/Falling, as visual accompaniment for live improvisation. The film combines found black-and-white footage of snowy expeditions with footage filmed by the duo on a Super 8 camera. A trek through a park and a tumble down a hill loosely trace a story of exploration and failure.
Brandon Locher is a self-taught musician and artist whose work is rooted in introspection, process, and a meditative approach to creativity. His hyper-detailed, labor-intensive drawings balance spontaneity and order, with forms evoking mazes, cell biology, and celestial bodies. Brandon’s mail art was created in response to Hermetic Fever’s film, and it shares the title Searching/Falling. It can be viewed from any orientation, allowing shifts in gravity and movement to emerge depending on how the image is held.
